On Saturday, the weather in Edinburgh was glorious and sunny, with a nice breeze whipping though the air. Katie said it was some of the best weather of the entire summer. I think the other inhabitants of Edinburgh agreed because they were out everywhere – picnicking, biking, walking with each other and their dogs.
William had not taken his new scooter for an outside ride, so we decided it would be a great day to visit Holyrood Park. The park is a virtual wilderness in the heart of Old Town Edinburgh and is located only minutes from Katie’s flat. Many guidebooks say that it offers a sample of all the landscapes of Scotland: glens, hills, lochs (lakes) and crags (mountains). It also offers very picturesque views of the city and its surroundings. The jewel of Holyrood Park is Arthur’s Seat, a long extinct volcano that is the highest point in Edinburgh.
We took a small paved path around a loch filled with swans and other birds before heading off across a glen on a light climb up one of the crags. I got to see plenty of heather and thistle growing in the wild, and from our vantage point observed some ancient stone ruins and sweeping views of Old Town and the Firth of Forth. It was a marvelous way to get some fresh air and spend my first afternoon in Scotland.
