At the start of our Saturday evening out, Katie treated me to dinner at Monster Mash, a very hip little restaurant near the University that specializes in traditional UK cuisine and amazing and inventive “mash” (mash potatoes). Katie chose a dinner of pork and apple sausages with mustard mash, while I continued on my adventurous eating streak and ordered the haggis.
This was not my first venture into the realm of the famous Scottish food with the less than appetizing ingredients and preparation methods (Curious? Here’s a Haggis Recipe ). During my first visit to Edinburgh, I decided to try haggis for the novelty of it and found that once you get past the contents, it is actually a very tasty, spicy dish.
The Scots serve their haggis several ways, traditionally with neeps and tatties (turnips and potatoes), on pizza or deep fried. I had mine on a large pile of some of the best mashed potatoes I’ve ever eaten, layered with pureed turnips, cooked carrots and a steaming brown gravy.
